Cynthia’s Kiss

I didn’t really expect this
In the blink of an eye
Something has shifted
And I wonder why

Is it luck or the devil?
That makes me feel this
It was Cynthia’s kiss, Cynthia’s kiss

Like a snapshot that’s frozen
In a wide gulf of time
Another explosion in this life of mine
I didn’t know I was wanting
Or waiting for this
It was Cynthia’s kiss, Cynthia’s kiss

Sometimes you find a stupid little thing to hold onto
Sometimes it’s what gets you through the night
Something gets tickled, that something is beyond you
I’m not saying everything is all right…

Something big is going on here
Something feels true
I’ve been knocked off my center
Don’t know what I’ll do
I didn’t know I was wanting or waiting for this
Cynthia’s kiss, Cynthia’s kiss

Sometimes you find a stupid little thing to hold onto
Sometimes it’s what gets you through the night
Something gets tickled, that something is beyond you
And I can’t get her out of my mind

There’s a twinkle in her eye yea
Her look and her lace
How her long wavy hair falls and frames her face
I didn’t know I was wanting or ready for this
Cynthia’s kiss, Cynthia’s kiss

It was Cynthia’s kiss, Cynthia’s kiss

Steam

The steam is gone
Now it's water dripping down like tears
On the window pane
And I turn away

The heat is gone
Now it’s smoke drifting off like clouds
On a winter’s day
And she turns away

One foot in front of the other
A deep breath
Before I go under
I don’t know where the next steps lead
I can’t see it’s not clear to me

The breeze is gone
There’s a stillness that settles in before the break of dawn
And this old heart is worn

The dreams are gone
There are some that stay with you
And some just slip away
Or disintegrate

One foot in front of the other
A deep breath
Before I go under
I don’t know where the next steps lead
Lookin’ for some sanity

Long ago we were planting roses
It’s a shame how fast the time goes, time flies
No words can mend the fences
I can’t make any sense of what got lost

The steam is gone
Now it's water dripping down like tears
On the window pane
And we turn away

Oasis

I don’t remember feeling this before
A thousand questions and just one more
Can we keep this safe and sound?
This oasis we found

You never know when two paths cross
And light the sky like those eyes of yours
Can we keep this safe and sound?
This oasis we found

Let’s lay our blanket by the fountain side
And share one river all night
And trust the stars above will be our guide
And take our time, in the warm moonlight

I never met someone quite like you
Who can touch me the way you do
Can we keep this safe and sound?
This oasis we found

Let’s lay our blanket my the fountain side
And share one river all night
And trust the stars above will be our guide
And take our time, in the warm moonlight

How many times do we fall in love?
And find the sweet spot we all dream of
Can we keep this safe and sound?
This oasis we found

This Is Paradise

You stare down
The long slide
Your heart is frozen like ice
You feel sad, that’s too bad
‘Cause this is paradise

Life is hard,
Make no mistake
It’s all a roll of the dice
You lick a wound
You feed the flame
Here in paradise

It’s all good, it’s alright
We should be terrified
The truth is dire,
We’re down to the wire
Here in paradise

Love can strike, once or twice
A random stranger is nice
She breaks your heart
A false start
Yes, this is paradise

You’ve got no money,
It’s not funny
Placing bets has a price
We all know, how it goes
Here in paradise

It’s all good, it’s alright
I hope you’re satisfied
The truth is dire,
Let’s go make a fire
Here in paradise

A Shot in the Dark

It was a shot in the dark
A bump in the night
A sound so clear, a bright spotlight

And it’s not like the nights when you toss and turn
And the sweat drips down your back
It’s the night when it all comes clear
There’s no turning back

Threatening clouds in a troubled dream
There’s a fork in the road
They’re both one-way streets
And it’s not like the dreams where you try to scream
And no words come from your mouth
It’s the night when it all comes clear
It’s time to get out

It’s a shot in the dark
It’s a shot in the dark

Shadows crawl as the full moon sets
There’s water under the bridge
A flooding river crests
And it’s not like the nights when the wind blows hard
And carries you away.
It’s the night when you see yourself
In a whole new way.

It’s a shot in the dark
It’s a shot in the dark

Empty Plates

There’s nothing better
Than sitting here with you
Like birds of a feather
Like I already know you

Our hands are on the table
Our eyes are lost in time
Why control this racing heart of mine

Empty plates, full glasses
Keeps me longin' for more
Empty plates, full glasses

Somehow we found each other
A fortune more than gold
Who knows where this comes from and
Where it goes

So many are so lonely
In so many ways
And here we are so lucky
With so much to say

Empty plates, full glasses
Keeps me longin' for more
Empty plates, full glasses

The waiters are stacking chairs
And we’re the only ones
Only we can see, what’s happening to us

Left of Center

If you want me, you can find me
Left of center off of the strip
In the outskirts and in the fringes
In the corner out of the grip.

repeat

And when they ask me
What are you looking at?
I’ll always answer, nothing much not much
I think they know that I’m looking at them
I think they think I must be out of touch

But I’m only in the outskirts and in the fringes
On the edge and off the avenue
And if you want me, you can find me
Left of center wondering about you.

I know that somehow, somewhere inside of us
We must be similar, if not the same
So I continue to be wanting you
Left of center against the grain

And if you want me you can find me
Left of center of the strip
In the outskirts and in the fringes
In the corner out of the grip.

If you want me, you can find me
Left of center wondering about you

River Town

The winds are howling down the Hudson tonight
A freight train is heading due north
The stars lay a blanket of light on this town
And life it goes on and goes on

The lights in the windows burn holes in the night
Each with a story to tell
And behind these locked doors the world spins around
And life it goes on and goes on.

I walk up the steps from the station tonight
The concrete worn down by the years
Of toil, heartache, hopes and dreams
That have travelled up and down through here
It’s the echo of those footsteps I hear.

On Main street the sidewalks are quiet by ten
A few drinks and small talk at the bar
I go home alone, I check the news in the car
Life it goes on and goes on.

In the distance the bridges string diamonds through space
The houses look out and beyond
On our bedroom pillows sweet dreams float in
It reminds me how lucky we are
That life it goes on and goes on

Now science can measure but cannot explain
How the simple can be so complex
But I guess it don’t matter if I figure it out
Life never lets on what’s next

There’s a kid from the high school, he’s now walking the beat
And it feels like a change of the guard
The highway winds down to this quiet little town
And life it goes on and goes on
Yes life it goes on and goes on…

My Emmylou
Steve Addabbo
© 2013 AGF Music (ASCAP)

Two guitars in the trunk of a car
Heading out on the road
To play some dusty bar
It seems so romantic, what else would I do?
But I never could find my Emmylou

She had long straight black hair
And that jumbo guitar
With a voice that dripped sorrow, it cut straight to my heart
Two voices alone, stage lights red and blue
But I never could find my Emmylou

That ache in her voice
Brought men to their knees
She was left on her own back in ‘73
Finding her voice in songs meant for two
It was then I first heard Emmylou

BRIDGE

We go down this road
With the choices we make
And sometimes fate helps you
And sometimes it looks like a life-sized mistake
Oh, I know that I’m dreaming
And fairy tales don’t come true
But that won’t stop me from looking
For my Emmylou

There’s an image I have of two out on the road
Lovin’ each other and living show to show
You can go it alone, but it’s better with two
I’m hoping we all find our Emmylou
I’m still lookin for my Emmylou….my Emmylou

The world is small, small enough, small enough for us
Let’s take a ride on my motorcycle tonight,

Let’s take a ride baby, alright
Let’s take a ride tonight

At high speed everything changes your mind
Well maybe you’re right I should take
Some time to decide

Let’s take a ride baby, alright
Let’s take a ride tonight
Let’s take a ride baby, alright
Let’s take a ride tonight

Bridge
It sounds like escape
The sound that it makes
The hush in my ears, as I fly out of here

I want to share what it feels like
All alone out there
Under my feet, through my hair
Anytime, anywhere

Chorus
Bridge

The world is small , small enough, small enough for us
